INSPIRATION WEDNESDAY LINK PARTY

Hello Friends!
The long awaited day is finally here!
My first EVER Inspiration Wednesday Link party is now live. Just a quick peek at what I have been working on this week. As you can see it's far from perfect...but I still have 3 drawers to go and a bit of tweeking! I cropped the picture so you don't see just how bad it is. I will definitely show you the final outcome sometime in the upcoming week.

Oh, and I just can't resist not to share with you what a wonderful surprise I had earlier this afternoon, while doing my rounds linking up to my fave link parties, wondering if it's even worth all the time I spend each week promoting my blog (I am so blaming this on my 14 hour shift the other day). Mind you, I get lots of traffic and wonderful comments and am so grateful! But today, for some reason the nasty cynic inside of me emerged to show me its ugly teeth. As I was trying to shut the little nagging voice in my head off, I clicked this link in my Linky Party tab:

That took me to this inspirational blog:

New Nostalgia

And found that my Speed Cleaning post was one of the most clicked on links! Well, if that isn't an inspiration to keep at doing what I've been doing, nothing is! Thank you Amy, you have truly made my day! I am so very grateful!

Ok, fellow bloggers, IT'S YOUR TURN!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for participating,
Have a fantastic day

ORGANIZING YOUR JUNK DRAWER

Almost every household has a junk drawer, and some 2 or 3. These drawers are often used as a dumping zone for any "miscellaneous" items that have no home, or whose homes are located somewhere else in the house. Needless to say, they get completely lost in a jumbled mess.

So is it safe to say that the junk drawers are a self-fulfilling prophecy?

If that is the case, lets stop this madness right now!

Let's rename our junk drawer, and call it our "drawer of essential items" or perhaps a "go-to drawer." Why you may ask? Because today we will declutter and organize this baby by equipping it with only essential items. This drawer will be the one that we'll go to when we need to jot down an appointment or a reminder, when we need to repair a rip, or when we need to hang up a picture...you get the point...

And as for our "miscellaneous" items we need to find them a permanent home elsewhere!

I do however, have a few simple steps to follow:

- Empty your current junk drawer.

- Make piles, separating items that don't belong there, and purging items you no longer need.

-Throw all the little pieces of paper and business cards into a small container. Later you can transfer all the information onto your calendar or address book.

-Sort into like piles (ex. office supplies, hardware-nails/screws, batteries etc)

-Invest in a drawer divider or use small shallow Tupperware containers or bowls to contain these "essential" items.

Some items you should be keeping in your "go-to  drawer":

  • Lip balm, clippers, gum, dental floss
  • Batteries
  • Small hammer
  • Multipurpose screw driver
  • Small pack of nails
  • Matches or lighter
  • Measuring tape
  • Elastics
  • Nail and thread
  • Notepad with a pen

I have purchased this organizing tray from IKEA. It sits on the edges of my "go-to" drawer and I can slide it easily side-to-side.

Under the tray, I placed a shallow tupperware container to house the tools, matches, needle and thread etc. And the other side I keep my notebook that I use to make my lists, plan my posts, and jot down my brilliant ideas. ;)

Just one more quick look at the whole drawer

Happy Organizing,

NO MORE LAUNDRY NIGHTMARES- Part 2

So last Monday, my sister gave us all a few stain removal tips, which were awesome! Thanks Val!

I on the other hand, am awful with stains. They scare me! Its like trying to solve a puzzle, knowing that if you get it wrong, that's it. The item is ruined. To avoid disappointment, I have been know to drop a piece of clothing off at my moms house for her to use her magic on (I have the best mom!). The whites come out beautifully bright, and the colors are amazingly vibrant. I am in awe each time.

Enough is enough! I have to start tackling these stains on my own...I am a mom now. So I have done my homework, and came up with a few tips to get rid of some pesky stains. Now, I just have to wait to get one...

Ivory Soap- removes cosmetics

Baking Soda-best for mud stained carpet

White Vinegar-sponge sweat stains

Lemon Juice- rust stains

Rubbing Alcohol-grass

WD-40- Butter, oil, margarine stains, ink stains

White wine- douse a red wine stain

Goo Gone- gum, crayon, tape

Have a fabulous week,

A MORNING WITH "ALEX"

This morning at 7:45 we had an uninvited, and totally unexpected guest.

It landed on my husband's finger on his way home from work, and happily remained on it for 20 minutes. My heart melted as I watched my husband talk to this bird "Why do you like me?" he asked, as the bird stared back at him. I knew the answer...probably the same reason everyone likes him. He is the most amazing human being on the planet!

The kids were thrilled with this visit! My daughter named it "Alex" since we didn't know whether it was "a boy or a girl" and gave it water and fed it bread crumbs...

Off they all went to school, leaving me alone with "Alex," who was completely content standing on my picture frame for four long hours. So what was I to do with this adorable green bird? I called my sister and told her the story. Online we went and searched to find out who this unknown creature really was.

Should I buy a cage and make it our pet?
Is it domestic or wild?
Cute it sure was! I wanted to keep it forever...

source

No sooner than we identified him as a Hutton's Vireo, the bird frantically started flapping its wings and flew up hitting the ceiling, bewildered flying circles around my living room. I grew nervous. I jumped up and flung the window wide open, and out flew "Alex"!

So long little birdie!

NO MORE LAUNDRY NIGHTMARES!!!

Hey guys,
My sister had some awesome advice about stain removal, so I begged  asked her to write a post to kick off my DIY Series on Stain Removal. She has written a few of my posts that can be found here, here and here. I hope you find her tips as useful as I have.
Have a fabulous Monday,
Kristina

Hello Everyone,

Over the past couple of years, I have learned (the hard way) not to dress my daughter in brand new clothes when she goes to my In-Law's house! She always comes home with a brand new stain and all they could say is “She’s a Kid!” Well she’s a kid at home too, but not as dirty!

I have spent a lot of money on different stain removers, that sometimes work just fine, but I have two monsters on the lose getting bigger and messier. The amount of laundry and stains just keeps increasing. So therefore the amount of money being spent on stain removers, that might not even help keeps increasing just as well.

My husband the self-proclaimed “know it all genius” (who would divorce me if he saw this comment), introduced me to Hydrogen Peroxide! On Berry stains, you just pour a little bit of baking soda, and some hydrogen peroxide over it, let it bubble and set it aside for an hour. Voila! Now, hydrogen peroxide is also good to soak grape juice, Popsicle and Koolade stains in. For blood stains, soak in cold water and salt, and if it’s still not coming out, add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to the spot and rinse it with water.

I have tried it on Strawberry stains that were fresh and the ones that set in for a few days, and it worked miracles. Also, my daughter had spilled some fruit juice on a t-shirt, and I soaked it with hydrogen peroxide, gone! Very impressive!

One of my personal “hates” is the tomato stains. Nothing a little bit of WD-40 won’t fix?! Spray a little bit on the stain, and you can wash it in a few minutes. The only thing I didn’t like was the smell of WD-40 that was left behind after the whole wash and rinse cycle, but the smell disappeared after it was dried. So it worked out pretty good!

Grass stains, little bit of dish soap rubbed into the stain, let it sit for a few hours, should be out! Grass stains on running shoes? With a sponge, rub in a little bit of molasses, leave it overnight, rinse and dry.

I have personally thrown out clothes because of mildew stains. But I heard that if you soak the garment in 2 cups of borax, and 2 quarts of water it should come out! Or, ¼ cup of color bleach with 1 gallon of warm water. Sounds pretty easy, wish I would have known before!
Are your kids having accidents during the night? No Problem! Remove urine stains by simply blotting them with club soda.

That’s all I have for now! I hope that this information helps you out. Some of these tips I have tried personally, and some I have heard from others.

Care to share on how you keep your kids clean?! Please feel free to post your tips, with hopes to end someone’s laundry nightmares!

TO SUM IT ALL UP:

Berry Stains, Grape juice, Popsicle, Kool-ade stains - Pour a little Baking Soda on stain, then pour Hydrogen Peroxide

Blood Stains - Cold water and salt. If the stain doesn't come out, spot clean with Hydrogen peroxide.

Tomato Juice - WD40

Grass Stain - molasses

Mildew Stain - 2 cups of borax and 2 quarts of water OR 1/4 cup of bleach and 1 gallon warm water.

Urine Stains - blot with club soda.

Wishing you the best of luck with your stubborn stains!

Val

HOW TO DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE YOUR HOME

With my kiddies and husband back at school, my schedule is WIDE open. Open to get my routine back on track. I am talking about my daily walks, highly dreaded work outs, cleaning and organizing...all of it! I admit, I let things slide a little. But I definitely don't regret all the free time it gave me to spend with my loved ones.

Before we get completely overwhelmed with clutter, we need to take the control back! The OCD person inside of me is screaming!

So where do we start? What do we do first?

Start with a plan. You will need a notepad and a pen. Make a list of all the rooms/zones in your home, then walk from room to room and take notes on ALL the things you need done (cleaning, decluttering, organizing, DIY ideas)

***For the time being we will concentrate on de-cluttering and organizing but I'm hoping that you will continue doing your Daily Speed Cleaning to keep things from getting totally out of control)***

Once you have made your list, it's time to make a schedule for the time you will need to complete all the projects on this list. Write it on the calendar! Depending on the size of your project, you can either schedule a whole week per room or a day per zone. Speaking from experience, don't overdo it the first day. Work in 15-30 minute increments, and if you get carried away, please don't go over an hour. You will exhaust yourself and will most likely give up.

Be patient with yourself, and stick to your schedule. Depending on the projects at hand, it might take you anywhere from one week to a couple of months to complete.

Start with the easiest project and then move to the harder ones. You'll gain momentum and feel excited about what you have accomplished.

Develop a system. I usually attack my areas by emptying everything from one zone at a time onto any nearby flat surface, where I could have a clear view of the items. Then,  having boxes or baskets at hand (labeled: Keep, Give Away and Toss), make a point of picking up each item and deciding what to do with it accordingly. If you find yourself hesitating, get rid of it!

According to the dictionary to de-clutter means to
Remove unnecessary items from (an untidy or overcrowded place)

Therefore, that is what we need to do: get rid of (either give away/donate or toss) all the unnecessary, rarely used items that you keep "just in case," and keep only what's essential for day-to-day life.

After you have decided what to get rid of, and what to keep, it's time to start sorting the "keep" items. Sort all like items together.

After you have done sorting, go shopping in your home first for baskets, boxes, Tupperware containers, bowls, trays... anything that can house these items and keep them contained in one spot. From there, you will get a clear idea if you need to run out to the store to get a couple of more boxes, and exactly how many more and what dimensions you need. Make a list! Don't just go to the store blindly without having a clear plan, and buy a bunch of boxes that will turn into clutter again (we're trying to de-clutter here).

You can make labels for everything if you like. By labeling, you assign a home for each group of items. I'm fairly new to labeling, but I found it so much easier to keep things neat this way. Even your family members will become more conscientious about where they are putting the items.

Now comes the fun part. Putting everything back in an organized manner. Make it pleasing to the eye. Take it all in! Pat yourself on the back! Do a victory dance! Reward yourself! GOOD JOB!!!

This is where I "forget" to close that drawer or cupboard, and walk by it a million times to admire the fruit of my labor... I know, I know what you're thinking. You are thinking that I am a complete dork! Oh I know, and am so stinkin' proud of it! So there ;)

But you are not done yet (sorry!). You have to live with this new system. You have to test it for a period of time, in order to figure out if this system fits your lifestyle and the lifestyle your family. Will this area stay nice and neat? What if it doesn't?

Ah, that's simple: you will need to revise the system, and test it again, until you find something that works for you! Be easy about it, and have fun!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Although I am not a professional in organizing by any means (I just have this crazy obsessive passion for it), I will be happy to help.

Happy decluttering, my friends!

IT'S OFFICIAL: THE SCHOOL HAS STARTED!!!

It is a rainy day in our city. The summer is officially over. My husband and I just came back from dropping the kids off at school. It is their first day in grade 2 and 3 (...Grade 2 and 3?! Wow!!! Where has the time gone?...). They were so cute, anxious and excited; excited to see their friends but a little nervous about what the new school year will bring. How I miss them already and even though we did this 5 times before, I can't help but worry about who their teachers are going to be, will they fit in, will they do well, are they going to eat (my son needs a reminder every couple of minutes to take a bite)...

I was putting my new school year calendar up on the fridge, and remembered that I didn't even show you all the goodies that came with it.

Few of my favorite things that came with the calendar are the reminder stickers, magnets to attach at the back of the calendar, and a double sided chore chart, each good for 16 weeks. There is also an anniversary chart, 16 month stand up desk calendar, and a phone directory (not pictured).

As you can see, there is plenty room to write.

And I even color coded my family members, too!

For those who are going back to school,  I wish you all a good, successful and safe school year!
