DIY CORKBOARD

Hello friends!

As mentioned here, my kids and I made cork-boards from their old armoire doors. This was a totally low budget project, costing less than $20!!!

Supplies used:
7 cork-board tiles
Ruler
Black marker
Scissors/Knife
Acrylic paint (pink, white and blue)
Sencils
Glittering stickers
Hot glue gun + glue

Using a ruler, we marked the cork to fit inside the frames of the doors. Then cut. Three tiles were short, and four didn't quite fit, so I decided to cut two panels and place them in between each tile.

We, then painted the cork tiles white, and let them dry.

We then painted 2 panels pink and 2 blue. On the pink, we added glittering stickers, and decided against adding them on the blue ones because they looked really girly.

We then stenciled my son's initials on his corkboard and a floral pattern on my daughter's.

We glued the cork tiles onto the doors, using a hot glue gun. And VOILA!!!

Have a fabulous Wednesday!

A 10 Minute Challenge and a Sneak Peek

Good morning friends,

I am enjoying my morning coffee, while the kids are eating their breakfast, and I thought it may be interesting to incorporate a little fun challenge for you today (if you are up to it, of course)! I certainly am!

10-MINUTE CHALLENGE

Set up your timer for 10 minutes and see how much of "the speed cleaning" you can do in this short amount of time. I bet you will surprise yourself! We all tend to overestimate the amount of time it takes to do those dreaded tasks! If you are not familiar with my speed cleaning routine go here. Start with your bathroom, it takes less than 2 minutes!

So, how did you do? Did you accomplish more than you thought you would?
Even 10 minutes a day makes a big difference!

Here is a sneak peek at the project we are about to undertake. My kids and I are making cork boards for their room from the old armoire chest doors. I will post the finished product next week!

Have a blessed day, and don't forget to have some fun!
Come back on Friday, for my Organizing Tip :)

LETS GO GREEN: Home Made Cleaners-Part 1.

Welcome back, my friends!
I got some recipes for you!!! Here is the least toxic, healthiest way of cleaning. It will also save you a bit of money, since you already have most of these items right in your pantry!

All Purpose Cleaners:
In a spray bottle mix:
-2 tablespoons of mild dish liquid
-2 cups of water

OR

Sanitize your Kitchen counter tops:
-White vinegar
-Hydrogen Peroxide
Spray one after the other and wipe away

OR

-1/4 cup Vinegar
-2 tablespoons Lemon Juice
-Squirt of Dish Liquid
-Warm water

OR
-1 cup Vinegar
-1 cup of water in spray bottle

If you need something a little stronger. You can make a gentle scrub to use on counter tops, sinks, faucets. Make a paste:
-Baking Soda
-Dish Soap

White vinegar is strong enough to dissolve dirt, soap scum and hard water deposits, yet it's gentle enough to use to clean your hardwood floors.

Drain Cleaner:
Pour into drain:
-1/2 cup Baking Soda
-1/2 cup white vinegar
-Plug the drain
-flush with boiling water
Tested and true!!! I will never spend a dime on another drain cleaner. I do this weekly on all of our drains and it keeps our pipes sparkly clean (and clog free)

Dish Liquid:
For greasy pots and pans
-scrub with salt.

For burned pots and Pans
-fill half way with water
-Tablespoons of Baking Soda
-Soak overnight
-Bring to boil

I have not tried these ones yet, but I wanted to keep here for future reference. Have you tried these? Do they work?

Do you guys have any recipes to share with me? Have you tried these, and what do you think?

Happy Cleaning!

ORGANIZING TOYS

If you have small children, like me, you probably all have the same problem: toys, TOYS, and more TOYS!!!
I am yet to find a system that will work effectively. In the ideal world, they would each have their own room, but this is what we can afford right now. My husband is back in school, working towards his Masters in English (really aiming at a PHD-fingers crossed), so we have a really tight budget.

You see, my kids are 7 and 8. My son is into his video games, so he doesn't really spend much time playing with toys, yet he is not ready to give them up just yet. And my daughter is all about her dolls and crafts. Needless to say, we have mountains of toys. We did a little push and pull and were able to minimize the mountain to a hill. We brought the toys they were willing to give up and donated them.

Until recently we had a cubed shelving unit in their room to store the toys in, but we had to make a much needed decision and bought two wardrobes to make more room for their clothing. Resulting with the only storage for the toys to be under bed...OUCH!

Of we went to the store, and bought plastic bins that will comfortably fit under the bed and almost serve as drawers. They can easily slide them out if needed.

We made cost effective labels from paint chips and cards. We cut up sheet protectors and made sleeves to protect the labels. We used shades of blue for my son's toys, pink for my daughters and green for their shared toys.

Since my daughter's Barbies and their accessories were overflowing (and she just could not part with any of it) we designated a "Hello Kitty" toy box just for them. Their accessories were sorted into a small drawer system that I bought from the dollar store.  The clothes we put into a "suitcase."  ;)

How do you guys organize your kids' toys? Do you have any cool tips to share with me?
Please do!

I would be happy to hear your thoughts,

THE POWER OF VINEGAR

Do you keep getting streaks on your mirrors, no matter what you use? Do your white socks get black just after you had washed your floors? Is your washer all blue from fabric softener? My answer was yes to all of the above!

I had tried countless of glass cleaners, paper towels, mops, dusting cloths, floor cleaners, scrubbing the floor on hands and knees with soap and water. You name it, I have tried it, yet I always ended up with the same result! A headache!

Years ago, when I still lived at home, I worked with an older lady who had told me that the best way to clean a window or a mirror is with simply vinegar and water in a spray bottle; and instead of using paper towels you should use newspapers. “The best, easiest, and cheapest solution to your problem” she would often say. One day after going through months of headaches with my bathroom mirror, I decided to call it quits, and suddenly my friend popped into my mind. Tried, tested and true! Works wonders.

Moving on to my streaky laminate flooring, that never seemed to get clean! That, my friends is my ultimate biggest headache! I felt like even if I moped the floors every hour, it would somehow still be dirty! The way I had discovered that vinegar and water works on my floors is because I had swept and washed my floors as I do regularly, and I got streaks as always, and here comes my 10 month old in her walker with cracker crumbs, my dog with her hair, and of course the husband with the shoes that he wears indoors and outdoors because he claimed  heels hurt. I had just finished doing the dreaded mirror and I walked into the living room to discover streaks and dusty footprints, freaking out, I got down on hands and knees and I sprayed my vinegar and water on the floor and started wiping it with a rag. Wow! I was amazed when it was done! (Mind you, I got rid of the shoes, dog and crackers right after!). Since then, my floor washing rituals have changed. I sweep, and then I mop with my vinegar and water solution! Works every time! To be sure, check with your wood floor manufacturer if it is safe to use vinegar, because it is too acidic for some wood finishes. I wouldn’t want to be the one to destroy your home.

Another use for it, LAUNDRY! I have always used liquid fabric softener and drier sheets as a combo for my laundry because I hate static! With the two kids that I have, I have approximately 12 loads of laundry a week. I think that I have cleaned my washer more times than my toilet. I kept getting blue residue all over my washer, constantly. I didn’t want to discontinue using my fabric softener, but there was no other answer! Until I heard from my cousin that she adds about a cup of vinegar into her rinse cycle to prevent static, kill bacteria, brighten her whites, and colors, and help keep her washer clean on top of it all FANTASTIC! I give you my word, I use vinegar in EVERY load I do. I ditched my fabric softener, BUT, even though my cousin says I should even ditch my dryer sheets, it’s still too risky! Maybe I’ll do a test run, but still not too daring!

Vinegar is a must have in my house, and I don’t know what I would do without it. I am sure that there are tons of other things you can do with vinegar, other than salad dressing! I will work on finding more answers, because if it works on other things, all of my house cleaning products will be replaced by gallons and gallons of vinegar! In my opinion it works miracles!

Care to share about my sour friend? Please feel free to post your vinegar secrets, so we can start ditching those expensive, no-good all purpose cleaners and buying jugs of vinegar.

Wishing you the best of luck with the wonders of magical vinegar, and a squeaky clean house to enjoy!

ORGANIZING OFFICE

I keep my office nice and tidy by filing and clearing my workspace at the end of each day. It has become a habit...now I just do it automatically, I don't even think about it! I keep everything sorted and purge what I have no use for. Therefore, I usually go through everything twice a year. I adopted this from years working in an office...I liked the system so much, I brought it home! I didn't miss my job, but I missed the system.

Home offices often become a dumping zone or a storage area for anything you are not using on regular basis. Anyhow, I do have some tips to share with you on how to become organized and stay that way. It's a breeze, once you get a hang of it. It only takes me 5-10 minutes a day.

-Lets start at the beginning. Just like with any other clutter, empty your desktop, drawers and shelves. I usually dump everything on my office floor (always keep your papers separate...we'll get to them later). Sort each item into piles. I have little bins that I find extremely useful for sorting my office supplies.

-Place all like items together in a separate bin or pile (pens, pencils, markers, whiteout, paper clips, staples etc.) I purge as much as I can as I go through this.

-Put the office supplies back to where they belong: either using drawer organizers, or if you don't have drawers in your desk, there are plenty desktop organizers available...choose what will suit your needs the best. You can also be creative and make your own! Just make sure that everything has its designated storage area.

-I also use a lot of little decorative cardboard storage boxes with labels (eg. stationary, business cards, tapes, cartridges etc) and put them on my shelves, along with books and framed photos. It looks neat, and I know exactly where everything is!

-Keep all frequently used reference books on lower shelves, where you can access them easily. Categorize them by subject and in alphabetical order.

PAPERS

-Again, same idea...sort through your papers, keeping everything in categories. Throw out unnecessary papers.

-Establish a broader category and sub-categorize all papers.

-Make sure you write the category and the year on each label.

-I keep all my active files separate from my archives. I archive my files at the end of each year and keep them in a small plastic bin in my storage area. These are the items that I have to keep for records, but don't use.

-My active files are placed into my filing cabinet...easily accessible. Alphabetical order.

-I also have a four-tray organizer on my desk. I labeled them:
    • Incoming
    • Outgoing
    • Processing
    • File
  • Open all mail daily. Discard envelopes. Staple papers together, stamp with date or write date received. Put into the Incoming tray.
  • I keep keep folders in my incoming tray labeled:
    • bills
    • to do
  • Once you pay your bills, stamp with "paid" and date it. Put into filing tray, and outgoing mail into Outgoing tray. I also keep my postage stamps and address labels in the Outgoing tray.

-My ongoing projects I keep in color coded binders on my Processing tray.
  • If you have due dates for each project, mark it in same colored marker on your desktop calendar.

-Take 5-10 minutes at the end of the day to clear off your desktop and file all papers from you Filing tray. Voila! Your job is done.

I hope my system helps you. It makes my life a hell of a lot easier.
If you have any questions or tips, we would be more than happy to hear from you.

Happy organizing guys!

4Things You MUST Do Every Day To Keep Your Home Looking Tip-Top

You never know when an unexpected guest might knock on your door. Four things I do every day to make my home look clutter free...even if I am too tired, lazy or just don't feel like doing my Daily 30 Minute Speed Cleaning.
 1. Wash, dry and put away dishes as they enter the sink. Nothing looks worse to me than a sink full of dishes. Your whole kitchen can be spotless, but if you have dishes in the sink, it ruins the whole picture.

2. Speed Sweep/Mop/Vacuum the floors and carpet just to freshen them up. I usually do this first thing in the morning, and if I know I will have a busy morning, I'll do it before I go to bed.

3. NEVER leave a room empty handed, especially if you have kids, you know what I'm talking about! My kids keep dragging toys in and out of their room all day long, and if I don't pay attention, the whole contents of their play room will end up in my living room. So I made this a rule. If I notice that they finished playing with something I pick it up and bring it back to their room or tell them to clean up their toys.

4. Walk through the house with a basket a few times a day, removing clutter.

One more....

Sorry!

5. I do laundry every second day. This helps me avoid getting overwhelmed with laundry...for anyone that knows me (REALLY knows me)...they know I HATE doing laundry more than anything else.

Happy Cleaning,

Just a sneak peek of what my children and were doing today...

I have a question for all you beautifully organized people: Do you have a label maker? And which one do you recommend?

Here are a few I found on the Staples website...decisions, DECISIONS....

ORGANIZING THE KITCHEN

-Wash, dry and put away any dirty dishes.

-Tackle the things you have been dreading first, so once that is out of the way it will be easier to finish the rest of the job.

-Keep at hand your sorting bins.

-Go through ALL of your dishes. Don’t feel bad to toss out items that are chipped, mismatched, plastic containers without the lid, or the fourth and fifth spatula that you never use. Less is more!

-Keep setting your timer especially in the cluttered spots and junk drawers to keep you on track. Put all piled up papers you find in one spot to go over another time, don't let yourself be sidetracked by them. If they keep piling up in your kitchen, and you’re starting to miss payments  because of being disorganized, pick up an mail organizer for bills next time you are at a store, and label them "INCOMING," "OUTGOING" and  "FILE." (I will go into greater detail in the "Organizing the Office" post)
  • INCOMING - is where you will put all incoming mail. If you have a few seconds, weed through them and toss the junk mail right away. Keep bills here. You might want to get rid of the envelopes and write the due date with a black marker on top.
  • OUTGOING- is where you put all your outgoing mail. Keep postage stamps and address labels here.
  • FILE - is where you will put all paid bills (stamped "Paid" with a date). This will be filed away as soon as you get a chance.

-If you already have a junk drawer in your kitchen, keep it in the same spot, because things WILL always pile up in there whether you like it or not. Keep it, but organize it! What we did in our mothers junk drawer is, we filled it with small, shallow Tupperware containers and every single one had different contents in it (eg. rubber bands, pens, little pads of paper, matches, etc.). She kept it clutter free for three years now!!!

-Keep items where you need and use them the most. For example, glasses and cups close to the sink, pots, pans, and cooking utensils should be close to the stove. Keep in mind the flow of things in the room. The items you use more, keep at arms reach and the ones you use less, store on higher shelves.

I hope these tips will help you on your journey to a perfectly organized kitchen!
